New reasons to worship Beck

Beck Hansen

Sometimes we find gems in unexpected places (or maybe they are gems because we DO find them in unexpected places). Don’t ask how I came across this blog by David Ramirez based out of Bogota, but I loved his post on Beck‘s side project Record Club so much, that I HAD to re-post here.

The concept is simple: a group of musicians come together to reinterpret and record an entire album in just one day. No rehearsal. No gimmicks or fancy tricks. The result is stunning. And they don’t just pick any albums, they pick some heavyweight choices — albums that already have a cemented place in all of our musical memories such as Velvet Underground’s “The Velvet Underground & Nico”, Leonard Cohen‘s “Song of Leonard Cohen” and my sentimental favorite, INXS‘ “Kick”. Way to make a girl crazy by reinterpreting one my favorite albums of all time, rehashing memories of my teenage rock crush on Michael Hutchence. Beck, I loved you for so many reasons already, but you’ve really done it this time.

Here’s Record Club’s version of INXS’ ballad “Never Tear Us Apart”. So exquisite that the 15-year old me can only hope it might ressurrect Michael from the dead.
